The Confusion Limits to the Sensitivity of Submillimeter Telescopes

چکیده

Outside of the Galactic plane there are two major sources of confusion that limit the sensitivity of con tinuum observations at submillimeter wavelengths the spatial structure of the thermal emission from dust in the Milky Way and the crowding of extra galactic sources at faint levels We present estimates of the noise expected from these two types of con fusion as a function of wavelength and beam size on the sky and compare them to detector and pho ton noise estimates for proposed space borne tele scopes Confusion noise cannot be reduced by longer integration times or more sensitive detectors and can limit the performance of cryogenic telescopes in the one meter class to a photometric uncertainty between and mJy at m

Although far-IR – mm-wave astronomy has now been developing for several decades, access to this portion of the spectrum remains difficult and limited. Relative to their optical-wavelength counterparts, the submillimeter observatories are both small in units of wavelength and hot in units of photon energy, which imposes limits on their angular resolution and sensitivity. Nevertheless, even the m...

Tracing the Evolution of Disk Galaxies with Galactic Structures and Gas Kinematics

Current evidence suggests that the epoch of disk formation occurred between 1 < z < 3. What were the properties of galaxy disks at the epoch of their formation? How did they evolve to their present state, and how was the Hubble sequence assembled? Although large and comprehensive datasets such as COSMOS, GEMS, and GOODS are now becoming available, it is possible that these questions will remain...

Far-Infrared and Submillimeter Observations of High Redshift Galaxies

Observations at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths promise to revolutionize the study of high redshift galaxies and AGN by providing a unique probe of the conditions within heavily extinguished regions of star formation and nuclear activity. Observational capabilities in this spectral region will expand greatly in the next decade as new observatories are developed both in space and on t...

Determination of confusion noise for far - infrared measurements ⋆

We present a detailed assessment of the far-infrared confusion noise imposed on measurements with the ISOPHOT far-infrared detectors and cameras aboard the ISO satellite. We provide confusion noise values for all measurement configurations and observing modes of ISOPHOT in the 90 µm ≤ λ ≤ 200 µm wavelength range. Based on these results we also give estimates for cirrus confusion noise levels at...

A General Formulation of the Source Confusion Statistics and Application to Infrared Galaxy Surveys

Source confusion has been a long-standing problem in the astronomical history. In the previous formulation of the confusion problem, sources are assumed to be distributed homogeneously on the sky. This fundamental assumption is, however, not realistic in many applications. In this work, by making use of the point field theory, we derive general analytic formulae for the confusion problems with ...
